Sani Pass & Lesotho day tour from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal

Sani Pass Day Tour

We start the tour with pickups from Durban, Umhlaga or Ballito, travelling with your tour guide Rudi, or his staff, in their safe and enclosed 4x4 vehicle. There are always many stops along the way for breathtaking photo opportunities as we journey up the scenic road to Underberg, and of course the occasional toilet stop too. We then enter the majestic and beautiful World Herritage site called the Drakensberg Mountains. We climb via the famous Sani Pass Road, known for being the highest road in South Africa, climibing up to 2865 meters. We also stop along the way for lunch (at your own cost) at the highest pub in Africa, at 2874 meters above sea level, as we enter the country of Lesotho, appropriately named 'The Kingdom in the Sky'. After lunch we also visit one of the most rural settlements in the world, known as Basotho Village.

This trips offers a fascinating insight into one of the most spectacularly beatiful areas of Southern Africa, from the crystal clear streams to the towering cliffs with volcanic basalt rock layers. Gain some truly local knowledge of the area, as your guides give you explanations on everything from the fauna and flora, to the history and culture of both the Drakensberg region and the country of Lesotho. All of this is why this has been rated as one of KwaZulu-Natals best day tours, so be sure to add it to your bucket list. Remember, that passports are essential for this trip.

Comments From Past Travellers

Drakensberg day tour from Durban"How lucky were we to choose Rudi as our guide to show us around Durban- very informative and we felt quite safe travelling with him to local markets etc.- and take us up the Sani Pass. This trip took 13 hours but the time seemed to fly and we felt like he was a friend not a paid tour guide. He is very knowledgable, the scenery is spectacular and while the roads near the top of the pass are quite narrow with a scary drop we never felt our lives were at risk. He gave us a unique glimse on the people of Lesotho, I wish we could have taken the 2 day tour with him and gone further into that region. I would recommend everyone to go on this trip as soon as possible, it will not be the same once they bitumen or cement the road as half the appeal is the unmade track."

Lesotho day tour from Durban"My husband and I did a trip up Sani Pass with Rudi in January and what an unbelievable experience it was. The weather was perfect and we had been told by friends that it was a very beautiful trip but it surpassed our wildest expectations. Apart from being an excellent guide regarding passing on information on the flora and fauna plus the history of the area Rudi was also a most interesting person and he just made our trip so much more than just a drive up a mountian pass. He shared his vast knowledge with us and was most attentive and patient regarding stopping to show us plants, insects, birds and even snakes. We stopped so many times to either photograph or just admire the views en route both up and down the pass. There were many waterfalls cascading down on both sides and we drove through crystal clear mountain streams stopping to taste the ice cold water. What a wonderful day it was and thank you Rudi for sharing it with us and making it so memorable. We will be back in winter, this time to view the snow and all the frozen waterfalls and once again to share all this with Rudi as we know that he will once again just enrich our souls with another unbelievable experience."

Full day tour, KwaZulu-Natal"If you are lucky enough to engage Rudi to drive you up the Sani Pass you will have an experince you will never forget. Apart from his great depth of knowledge of the area, its people, flora and fauna he is extremely passionate in what he does and this passion is shared with his clients that gives one a real life experience rather than a tourist experience. ("been there done that") His description of the Lesotho lifestyle sitting in the Lesotho hut was delivered with enthusiasm and demonstrated a genuine understanding and love for the people of Lesotho.  He also has an entertaining sense of humour!"
